Case Study 1

The management development section in Leicester City Council decided to offer executive coaching to senior managers, following the completion of a 360°-degree appraisal process. This offer was made not only because of the belief in coaching as an appropriate medium for development, but also in the light of feedback from this group of managers that a more general, scheduled programme may not have met their needs.

After successfully tendering for the work, the qualified business performance coaches from
Strategic Applications Ltd have been working with 15 senior managers on an individual basis, focusing on identified development areas. These have been diverse, including performance management, behavioural change, implementation of corporate strategy and change management.

On average, clients have asked to see their coach for about 2 hours a month to review and evaluate their agreed actions, and agree further actions, to move their improvement plan forward.

One effect of this involvement with senior managers has been the opportunity to tender for development work with their teams, and we are pleased to say that we have been largely successful in meeting these requirements, too.

For an organisation such as Leicester City Council, having a consultancy company that is trustworthy, reliable, cost-effective and well received by its discerning managers, gives them confidence to request tenders and proposals from us, trusting that we can deliver what we promise and that we will maintain the quality of our service in the most cost-effective way possible.

Case Study 2

The regional railway, First North Western Railways (FNW), responded to the recent perceived safety problems within the industry by addressing the training of its staff in a methodical, well organised way. Through its Training Academy, the company wished to ensure that all instructors, trainers and assessors were trained and qualified consistently.

Because of similar work that
Strategic Applications Ltd had delivered in other railway companies since 1994, FNW approached us with specific requirements for training and accreditation.

In partnership with FNW, we were able to design and deliver instructor, trainer and assessor training programmes, all of which are accredited by the Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Awarding Body, through its Customer Specific and NVQ Awards.

As a result, 130 operational instructors, 6 specialist trainers and 50 managers, responsible for assessing staff, attended training programmes over18 months.

The programmes included practical skills, theoretical underpinning, and assessments in the workplace. The results were externally moderated and verified by the awarding body (OCR) and both Strategic Applications and FNW have been strongly praised by OCR for the integrity and quality of the programmes and their outcomes.

Following the successes of these accredited programmes, we also delivered a performance management programme for supervisors and look forward to working with the successor to the franchise, Northern Rail, on these and other such training programmes.
